It is little wonder Raj works in aviation - after all, she began flying in her native New Delhi at age 16 in a glider, a motorless airplane carried by air currents. She still holds three records in India today for flight length (5.5 hours), height (12,000 feet) and distance (56.5 miles).

She started flying thanks to her brother-in-law, who was her local airport’s senior meteorologist and entry-point to the world of aviation. She would walk four miles to Safdarjung Airport to follow her passion, flying in a time when “women weren’t considered to be fit for flying.”

After graduating college, and following decades of government experience in India and Virginia, she joined our Department of Aviation in 1998. Always offering improvements and suggestions for ATL’s customer service, it was her idea to label the doors as S1 and N2, for ease of navigation. In her words, “I want to work. I never say that I’m tired. That ‘tired’ word is not in my dictionary.”
