Immigrant Farmers Put Down New Roots | Maryland Farm & Harvest

When farmer Niyi Balogun moved from Nigeria to Maryland, he knew he wanted to keep farming. But as a recent immigrant to the United States, finding land was a challenge. With the help of his wife and business partner, Tope Fajingbesi, they found the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. Here, 93,000 acres spread across the county have been set aside for agricultural use. A nonprofit called The Montgomery Countryside Alliance helps connect farmers like Niyi to landowners, which allowed him to start Dodo Farms, a one acre produce operation that grows both familiar items and traditional Nigerian crops.
