How 1 Sailor Freed USS Sherman Jammed Rudder in 42 Seconds in 3-Degree Cold Water

At 3:19 AM in the Barents Sea, a torpedo detonated 19 meters off USS Forrest Sherman's port stern. No hull breach. No flooding. Hydraulic pressure normal. The rudder was jammed.

The shockwave's lateral impulse on the rudder blade had forced the rudder stock against the forward face of its lower bearing — a friction jam that the hydraulic actuator couldn't overcome no matter how much pressure was applied. The ship could only turn right using asymmetric thrust. The Nordkapp shelf was 34 nautical miles ahead. The submarine was somewhere aft.

The aft steering compartment contains an emergency mechanical rudder release tool — a 1.2-meter lever arm designed to apply torque directly to the rudder stock. But when the Damage Controlman opened the access hatch, he found 20 centimeters of water at 3°C. A stern tube seal crack, discovered only on entry.

He descended anyway. He found the manual drive socket on the rudder stock. He inserted the tool on the second attempt — cold hands, poor light. He pushed the handle toward starboard and held it. Against the hydraulic actuator's 2,200 PSI resistance. For 42 seconds in 3-degree compartment air.

The bearing released at 3:23:09 AM. Rudder authority restored at 3:23:19 AM.
