5 Movie Directors Who Died in Mysterious Circumstances

Movie directors rely on their creative techniques to heighten the effect of cinematic deaths. So in movies, deaths can be quietly poignant, disturbingly violent, bloody gruesome or tragically cold. 5. Helen Hill
Two years after hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, “The Crescent City” was once again at the center of the news after a spate of murders rocked the city in 2007. On January 4, six murders transpire, and one happened as early as 5:30 a.m. The hapless victim was 36-year old filmmaker Helen Hill who was shot dead in her home by an unknown intruder

4. James Whale
Film enthusiasts would readily acknowledge that Hollywood’s earliest “father of horror” was British film director James Whale, the brain behind such horror classics as 1931’s “Frankenstein,” 1933’s “The Invisible Man,” and 1935’s “Bride of Frankenstein.” Whale was also one of the few gay men of early Hollywood to be openly homosexual living with his partner, producer David Lewis. Whale seemed to have everything so it was such a bewilderment when on May 29, 1957, Whale’s lifeless body was found lying face down at the bottom of the swimming pool at his Pacific Palisades home.

3. Pier Paolo Pasolini
The death of Italian film director, writer and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini on November 2, 1975 at a beach in Ostia, Rome could’ve been one of the most brutal death scenes in the movies. He was run over several times by his own car causing multiple broken bones. His testicles were crushed by what appeared to be a metal bar.

2. William Desmond Taylor
William Desmond Taylor became a popular figure during the silent movies era in Hollywood circa 1910s to early 1920s. He acted in 27 silent films and directed 59. But on February 1, 1922, Taylor’s flourishing career was curtailed when he was shot dead in the shoulder at his Los Angeles duplex.

1. Thomas H. Ince
American silent filmmaker Thomas H. Ince, known as the "Father of the Western,” made over 800 films and created the first movie studio called Inceville.
