We were involved in a last-lap racing incident with boat S-28 "Phase 5" in a battle for the lead of the final race of the 2020 OPA Crystal Coast World Championships in Morehead City, NC, October 25, 2020.

After successfully navigating around a boat which slowed dangerously on the raving line, we entered the turn in the middle lane, and exited in the same, providing at least a 25 foot space to the buoy. S-28 entered the turn off-apex and chose the inside line, behind us. S-28 carried too much speed into the turn, such that they could not maintain their lane, resulting in an impact to our port side, and a subsequent overturn. At no time did we put S-28 in a dangerous position, nor deny them the racing line they took through the turn, at the exit.

Given the evidence in the video, we reject the ruling by race officials to penalize us, and place us 6th, and we maintain that we committed no infringement of the rules. Our spirit of competitiveness is second only to our commitment to safety. We demonstrated that commitment by leaving our competition room to challenge our position.

Thankfully no one was injured in this incident, but the only way to try to ensure accidents like this are prevented in the future is to enforce the rules put in place for the safety of the racers.
