STRANGE VIEWS OF CRATERS ON MARS DISCOVERED: The spacecraft found very unusual craters on Mars

A huge volcanic area on Mars, called the province of Farsida, is crowded with unusual craters that were not created by meteorite impact. New images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft show that these craters are found elsewhere on Mars.

Unusual depressions on the surface, called pit craters, can be found not only on Mars, but also on the Moon, Venus, and even Earth. These craters are not the result of space rocks falling to the surface. They are formed by the collapse of rock over a void that was created by the passage of lava flows. Scientists can distinguish such depressions on Mars from ordinary impact craters because they do not have raised edges and there is no evidence of rock ejection after impact.
