A steering wheel which was gifted by the iconic Formula 1 racing driver Ayrton Senna to a track worker fetched £5,000 (US $6,575) at an auction, as shown in footage filmed in Wolseley Bridge near Stafford on Friday.

The wheel was used by the Brazilian while driving for Lotus at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1987, where he finished second behind Britain's Nigel Mansell.

The memorabilia takes on added poignancy as Imola is the same track Senna would go on to die at seven years later at the age of just 34.

Explaining why there's such fascination to this day with the legendary driver, senior auctioneer at Hansons Auctioneers Rik Alexander said his image is part of his appeal.

"Ayrton Senna is iconic. He is the Formula One playboy almost from this period and people remember Ayrton Senna from a certain age," he said.

"But also the younger generation now have the Senna film so he's there in everyone's consciousness as what many people regard as the greatest F1 driver."

Interest in Senna was renewed earlier in the decade through the eponymous film, which swept up during awards season.

Before his death, Senna won three Drivers' Championships in 1988, 1990 and 1991, totalling 41 career wins and racking up 65 podium finishes.
