Building a Guitar Fuzz! First look and early demos of The Ruthie.
Hi, I'm Jeff Starr, a filmmaker who also loves guitars and gear. This video is about a new pedal I am designing called “The Ruthie." This is built to be an always on PreAmp-to-Fuzz. With with pedal engaged and your guitar volume rolled back the pedal outputs a signal similar to what you would normally have at max guitar volume. The signal can be thinned or thickened as desired using the "Mittens" control. As you raise the volume on your guitar the Ruthie shifts into a Fuzz style clipping circuit. You get additional volume, but the sound also compresses in a natural way to avoid a harsh jump in volume. Increasing the mittens control adds a warm woolly thickness to signal.
My goal is to create a circuit that you always want to leave on as it sweetens your tone and makes your guitar more dynamic and responsive. I think this will make sterile digital and solid state amps come alive. It sounds fantastic running into tubes.
Instructions: Turn your amp down, engage the pedal and set your guitar volume at max. Set your amp volume to as loud and overdriven and you can get away with, then turn it up a touch more. Roll back your guitar volume for clean up (usually around 6-8 on your guitar volume depending on your pickups). This is now your clean sound. Increase the guitar's volume or change your pick attack for more fuzz.
I hope to build and sell these in limited quantities. More info to come.
Why is it called The Ruthie? Well, my mom (Ruth) always jokes that no one ever named any of the kids after her. When I realized that I was designing an "Always On" pedal and knowing how a mother's work is never done it seemed like a good way to name something after her, one of the hardest working people I know. Thus, the Ruthie. Plus, mom always want's to make sure that you are prepared and have your mittens; so, that inspired the name for the tone control.
