Under the Constitution, the President cannot simply hire their top cabinet-level members; the Senate must formally vet, debate, and confirm them before they can take power.

As the USTR, Jamieson Greer now serves as the President’s principal trade advisor, negotiator, and spokesperson on global trade issues. He is the official responsible for negotiating massive international trade agreements, enforcing existing treaties, and—crucially—implementing the administration's aggressive tariff policies. Supporters of the nomination pointed to his extensive previous experience at the USTR (where he served as Chief of Staff) and his tough-on-China stance, arguing he is the exact architect needed to protect American manufacturing and penalize countries that use unfair trade practices.
