Refurbish A Vintage Magnepan Mangneplanar Speaker

Update Dec 2021:

Mick Bucher from Magnepan’s service department reached out to me to discuss my video. While all his feedback was positive, he also asked if I wanted any constructive feedback for future restorations. I enthusiastically accepted his advice so here is what he recommends doing differently:

“ Mostly I think you did a great job! There is really only one major critique, and a couple of small improvements.
-The major critique is: You went heavy on the 30-NF. There is not a precise amount of glue in those cans but there is supposed to be more than enough in a can to redo a pair of the largest Magnepan speakers (MG 3 series or MG20 series). A single thin coat is all that is necessary. The reason this is relevant is because the more massive the diaphragm is, the less efficient it becomes, the more 'slowly' it responds, and the more 'dampened' its sound quality is. Everything that is on the Mylar is already a concession of efficiency for function's sake, so the bare minimum amount of glue is the ideal.
-Following along that line of thinking, you can save yourself on some mass by spraying the wire run directly with the Super 77 rather than the driver. You'll probably want to spray the Mylar directly for maybe every third to fifth run depending on your speed, otherwise just spay the bottom of the wire in the air and then tack it down. (This is a process that is used when laying foil on Maggies, but it works for the wire too.)
-You don't need to use cotton balls though there's nothing objectively wrong with that either. Cotton cloths work a little better in my opinion as they have a larger surface area.
-The spray bottle is a neat trick but you don't really have to be all that careful with the acetone. You can literally just pour it onto the Mylar--it can't damage it.
-…. Scotch tape on the Mylar is the remedy for holes and tears. The key, though, is to use as thin of a tape as you can reasonably find. Standard packaging tape is a little bulky and it's necessarily idea. (Again because of the mass issue.)”

He was also nice enough to mention the grumpy man I spoke on the phone is no longer with the company and customer service has improved since. Thanks for taking to the time to speak with me Mick, the next Magnepan video will be better because of it!

I'm aware this is a very niche video on a product most people don't care about. However, this video will hopefully help someone out there like me who is fascinated by magneplanar but has no idea where to start. The model I am fixing is a MG-IIA. Although that is only my best guess.

Feel free to ask me project questions and I will do my best to follow up with an answer.

Stay tuned for the next episode where I attempt to make art with a recycled laptop.
