Microsoft claims oven door material can replace expensive fused silica for long-term data storage
What if data could be stored in glass for thousands of years?
Microsoft’s Project Silica is exploring that possibility by using laser etched glass as a long term archival storage medium.
When we first covered the project, the system relied on fused silica, an expensive and hard-to-find material.
Now researchers at Microsoft claim to have made significant progress on the project by using borosilicate glass. This is a far more common material and is used in everyday items such as oven doors and kitchen cookware.
If the approach proves viable, it could make ultra long term data storage far more practical.
