No injuries after fiery derailment of train hauling crude oil in Whatcom County

A tanker train hauling crude oil derailed in Whatcom County Tuesday morning and several train cars burst into flames. There are no reports of injuries.

Six tank cars derailed near Custer at 11:46 a.m., according to the Whatcom County Sherrif's Office. It's unclear what caused the train cars to derail.

Oil is still burning from two of the tanker cars, but the flamers are under control, the sheriff's office said. The fire is burning at the end of the train, according to BNSF Railway.

Everyone within a half-mile radius of 7500 Portal Way was told to evacuate after the derailment. Evacuations were lifted just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, but residents are being asked to stay indoors. The sheriff's office warns everyone to avoid the derailment site.

I-5 was closed between Grandview Road and Birch Bay Lynden Road for about an hour on Tuesday afternoon, but has since reopened. Local road closures are still in effect, according to Trooper Heather Axtman. https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/train-derailment-whatcom-county/281-1c96bbd0-2dc5-4f06-9a6c-f36ad4bf56e8
