Yo Me Muero Donde Quiera

“Si me echan un lazo
Respondo a balazos;
Si me echan un grito,
De en medio los quito.”

During the Mexican Revolution, many women
fought alongside men as equal soldiers to topple
a corrupt government.

Although this song represents the brave attitude
that one will die wherever they please for their
cause, the song may be interpreted with a
feminist message and a general statement that
anyone can and will fight any cause as they please.

The song goes that “if they throw me a lasso, I will
respond with bullets and if they whistle or shout at
me, I will eliminate them.” Gender roles in mariachi
music tend to be reversed from the typical modern
Western tradition in which males write songs in
which their feelings are hurt while females boast
about their role in society and empowering other
women to do the same.

Although the music conveys women empowerment,
the reality shifts to degrading our women that even
results in injustice and death.

Vanessa Guillen’s tragedy only begins to show the
tip of the iceberg with the injustices from degradation
of women to murders of women. México has mariachi
to elevate women but in reality it is not practiced
enough.

Our US military may have female soldiers but Guillen’s
death shows we lack equal treatment of women,
bringing perpetrators to justice and prevention of
injustice.

Protect our women because we all came from one.
