Meaning Of The Miraculous Medal #stcatherinelaboure #miraculousmedal #mothermary
St. Catherine Labouré was a French nun who received visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1830, leading to the creation of the Miraculous Medal. The medal's design, which she was instructed to have struck, features Mary on the front with the inscription, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee". The reverse depicts the letter "M" with a cross, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Devotees believe the medal grants great graces to those who wear it with faith.
The visions and the medal
First apparition: The first vision occurred on July 18, 1830, when Mary appeared to the novice Catherine in a chapel and prophesied sorrows for France.
Second apparition: On November 27, 1830, Mary appeared again and showed Catherine the model for the medal.
Description: Mary was shown standing on a globe, with rays of light streaming from her hands, and was accompanied by the inscription "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee".
Reverse side: The vision then turned to show the reverse side of the medal, featuring a cross, the letter "M," and the hearts of Jesus and Mary, all surrounded by 12 stars.
The medal's impact.
Graces and miracles: Mary promised that those who wear the medal would receive abundant graces, especially if worn with faith.
Official approval: The medals were struck in 1832 after Catherine's spiritual director, Father John Marie Aladel, sought and received permission from the Archbishop of Paris. An official inquiry in 1836 concluded the medal was of supernatural origin.
Worldwide devotion: Devotion to the Miraculous Medal spread rapidly throughout the world, and it is associated with numerous conversions and miracles over the years, such as the conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne in 1842.
St. Catherine Labouré: Catherine Labouré lived out her life as a nun, working with the elderly and infirm until her death in 1876. She was canonized in 1947.
