Progress at the Jerash University Permaculture Project, Jordan

Geoff introduces the Jerash University permaculture project (https://jordan.un.org/en/241518-un-habitat-and-permaculture-research-institute-launch-pilot-permaculture-project), highlighting its rapid development over the past year. The tour covers three main systems: a vegetable polyculture with integrated chicken composting, a commercial composting setup, and an olive grove converted from monoculture to polyculture. Each area demonstrates permaculture’s emphasis on sustainable, regenerative practices as an alternative to conventional agricultural methods.

This project aims to establish a permaculture farm at جامعة جرش - Jerash University. The project will allow students to learn and practice permaculture principles and techniques while providing a sustainable food source and other resources. The project also extends its outreach education to fifty local villages, and two hundred local people will get the chance to take our next online Permaculture Design Certificate course.
This project is funded by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, as part of their initiative to increase resilient water solutions against climate change in Lebanon and Jordan.

Key Takeaways

- Diverse Polyculture System: The project integrates chickens for egg production and composting directly within a vegetable polyculture, enriching the soil and reducing waste.

- Commercial-Scale Composting: Using local resources and equipment like a wood chipper and compost turner, the site creates compost at a commercial scale, showcasing sustainable fertility methods accessible for large farms.

- Monoculture to Polyculture Transition: An inherited olive grove is being converted to a polyculture with drip irrigation and companion planting, improving soil health and biodiversity as a resilient alternative to traditional monoculture.
