Black Bear Road Part 1
Black Bear Road! For anyone who has heard about Colorado Jeep roads, the name Black Bear conjures up visions of a steep narrow shelf road with steep drop off’s (1,000 feet in spots) located in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride, Colorado. In September, 2016 we had the opportunity to drive Black Bear Road on a 3-week Jeep tour of Colorado. The days were sunny and warm yet the nights were crisp and clear. The Black Bear trip included awesome scenic views, waterfalls and wildlife. A spectacular view from above tree line awaited us at 12,840 ft. summit.
This video, part 1 covers the relatively easy east approach to Black Bear Pass from Highway 550. The turn for Black Bear is found just south of Red Mountain Pass summit. I’m NOT going to rate the difficulty or danger of driving Black Bear. I have been driving roads like this for over 35 years. Some areas of this road that I would determine are easy may intimidate novice or unsure drivers. I don’t want to mislead anyone on what skill or equipment they need.
If you are wondering about or planning a trip over Black Bear Road and Pass I encourage everyone to do their homework on road conditions, weather, best time to visit, and especially you and your vehicles capability in such terrain. Again, I will let others judge the difficulty rating of this road. ) Info from AllTrails: http://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/black-bear-pass and other sources).
