#‎Sea turtles #the life journey of baby turtles survival begins at birth

‎Sea turtles in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) face many threats, from disturbed nest sites to pollution, plastic, boat traffic and climate change.

‎But one threat is no longer what it used to be: the turtle fishery.

‎As part of a collaborative project including the TCI government, our UK Overseas Conservation Manager, Amdeep, spent four years with local fishers and the wider TCI community to better manage the turtle fishery. What worked? Combining science and community knowledge to create a shared understanding and respect for the value of larger, reproductive turtles.

‎This led to community-endorsed legislation that respects traditional harvesting rights while ensuring the crucial protection of large, breeding adults, giving turtle populations the chance to recover.

‎And it seems to be working. Turtle nesting is now being recorded in areas where it has never been recorded before, likely due to increased fisher compliance with the recent legislation as well as improved enforcement.

‎Following the symposium, we'll be developing frameworks to ensure long-term, sustainable conservation of sea turtles.

‎We need to ensure healthy sea turtle populations for the future and that communities are part of this
