Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux disease is an abnormal backflow or regurgitation of acidic content from the stomach into the esophagus. The process of regurgitation results in esophageal inflammation and irritation, causing heartburn. Severe and long term inflammation of the esophagus leads to ulcers that may gradually bleed and cause scars ultimately resulting in strictures.
