In world news and current events today, Black Lives Matter UK protesters in Bristol, England tore down a statue of the infamous slave trader Edward Colston and dumped it in the river.
The Colston statue was a source of controversy for years, as the prominent Englishman profited from the slave trade and used his fortune to fund many establishments in the city. When the statue was torn down, many saw it as a parallel to the Confederate statues still shamefully on display throughout much of the US, many of which have also fallen as a result of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests. The Black Lives Matter movement has grown beyond the united states, as activists and protesters from around the world have rallied against symbols of hate and racism.
