World War II’s Cruelest Forced March | History 101

In April 1942, following the surrender of over 75,000 American and Filipino troops to the Japanese army in the Philippines, one of the most brutal war crimes of World War II began—the Bataan Death March. Prisoners of war were forced to march over 60 miles through blistering heat, with little to no food or water, while being beaten, tortured, or executed for collapsing or falling behind.

Thousands died along the route from starvation, dehydration, disease, and violence. Some were run over by trucks, others bayoneted, and many were left to die in the ditches. What was meant to be a transfer of prisoners became a mass atrocity, carried out by the Japanese military in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Survivors recalled the march as a living nightmare—marked by cruelty, exhaustion, and helplessness. The Bataan Death March became a symbol of Japanese brutality, and after the war, several Japanese officers were tried and convicted for war crimes related to it.

But how did this atrocity unfold? Why were POWs treated with such inhumanity? And how is the Bataan Death March remembered today in the Philippines and the United States?
