Every year on June 2nd, America celebrates chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts for National Rocky Road Day. In the United States, the most popular way to eat Rocky Road is ice cream. Although Rocky Road comes in many variations, traditionally, the ice cream includes chocolate ice cream, nuts, and marshmallows. Today, there are variations with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and almonds.

Did you know?

It was way back in 1853 that Rocky Road was first mentioned as a dessert in Australia. The idea of rocky road was created to sell desserts that had already spoiled during the long trip from Europe. They added locally grown nuts and some cheap chocolate to cover up the terrible taste.

According to this story, the name, Rocky Road, comes from the awful road that the travelers had to take to reach the Australian gold fields.

In 1917, Darrell Lea started making confectionaries in the back of his small fruit shop. His first candy bar was the Bulgarian Rock. That was later followed with the now famous, Rocklea Road bar.

It was in 1929 that William Dryer, in Oakland California, cut up walnuts and marshmallows with his wife's good sewing shears, The original rocky road ice cream used chocolate ice cream with no chocolate chip pieces. By blending the ice cream, toasted almonds, and marshmallows, Dryer had invented one of the very first types of ice cream to mix flavors together!
