Cursed / Haunted Swords (Tyrfing, Muramasa, "Satanic" Ritual Sword)

You have probably heard of mythical blades like Gram / Balmung, Excalibur, and Durandal, imbued with magic that makes them indestructible and grants the wielder special powers. Some of them however were said to come with a price...

Viking sagas tell us about Tyrfing, a sword crafted by dwarves (Svartalfar, literally "black elves") that made the user all but invincible. A curse was put on it that would trigger a berserker rage every time it's drawn, cause three evil deeds, and ultimately cost the owner his life.

In Japan we're told of the legendary swordsmith Muramasa who crafted exceptionally sharp blades said to be bloodthirsty. The Tokugawa clan in particular believed to have suffered bad luck from them, experiencing one tragic event after another, all involving a katana or wakizashi made by Muramasa.

In modern times there are still examples of swords claimed to be haunted. One of them was given to the Travelling Museum of the Paranormal and Occult after it was used to "summon demons". It supposedly possessed a girl with the urge to spill blood.

So let's take a closer look at these mysterious objects with a reputation for having a supernatural mind of their own...
