What NOT to do during your SOLO flight - Wheelbarrow off the Runway from JET BLAST?

***JET BLAST potential cause of hard landing. Clay R pointed this out on 10/5/2020. You can see the United plane lining up to pull into the gate, and right as I'm perpendicular to his tail, my tail kicks right and the nose hits hard. What do you think???***

**Video from June 2018, during second supervised Solo**

**EDIT** I'm well aware that the yoke doesn't steer the airplane. As all the weight is on the nosewheel, I remember when I applied right rudder that I felt the aircraft further tilt along the horizontal axis toward the left wing. I think I ended up subconsciously trying to "steer" the aircraft in the same way one jerks the Nintendo controller like a steering wheel when playing Mario Kart. It wasn't until the weight was on the the main wheels that I felt comfortable applying more right rudder, and by that time I had already veered off the runway and locked up the brakes.

Clip from my second landing, second Supervised Solo Flight.

Had to go around the first time because I caught a fairly decent wind gust just across the threshold that I didn't feel comfortable with.

A few moments before touchdown, the tower reports wind calm. We had been getting reports of variable winds up to 7 knots, with minor left or right crosswinds during the warm up.

You'll notice right before the nosewheel and right main wheel hit, I feel a pretty good gust that whips my tail to the right and up a little bit. I believe I incorrectly tried to correct with right aileron as I see everything in my wind screen shift as the tail kicks right. It looks like I even move the elevator forward momentarily at the same time. The nose lands hard in a slight crab to the left, sending me in a trajectory toward the left side of the runway.

I'm trying as hard as I can to get the plane to steer to the right, but couldn't manage until I almost came into contact with a runway light as I veer off the runway. I was afraid of taking out the back pressure and causing the wheelbarrow to increase, possibly leading to a further loss on control and wing strike.

Either way, it was a scary moment and I hope to learn a big lesson from this! After talking with my instructor after the incident, we agreed that I had been coming in with too much airspeed, which caused an excessive float. Others have pointed out that I should be manipulating the ailerons so much when in ground effect, which is correct. When the gust kicked my tail right, I should have immediately applied right rudder to remain parallel to centerline. Combined with my controls being too jerky and not making smooth corrections, it all added up to something that could have turned out a lot worse. Either way, I'm happy I avoided an embarrassing accident and I live to fly another day. Thank you, Lord!
