Many years ago Brent Doerner, who played guitar for HELIX from 1976 until 2008, introduced me to the song "Rock n Roll" by Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. But the version he was hot on (and me too!) was the version by Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels. It ROCKED! Years later Helix would play a little bar somewhere in Indianna with Mitch Ryder. I actually met him as I was taking a piss in the alley behind the club, which had a back door leading to the stage. He joined me for a piss just before his show. We said hello but did not shake hands. LOL. Definitely a rock and roll icon that man....The second song in this medley is Don't Try to Lay no Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll by Long John Baldry. We almost played with Baldry back in the late 70's. It was a concert in Oakville, Ontario. We were playing a night gig at the Queens Hotel in Seaforth (where we wrote H.M. Love) and so Seipy booked us an afternoon gig there. Savoy Brown had just taken the stage when a freak thunderstorm hit, bringing down much of the lighting truss and flooding the sound system. Lightning struck one of the security guys and blew the tennis shoes right off his feet and left a black burn mark in the shape of his necklace medallion on his chest. He survived. Ironically, Chery Lescom, who sings back ground vocals on this track with Daryl Gray, used to sing in Long John Baldry's band. The idea for the medley came up at preproduction
