Trucker's Hitch

Here the FF is demonstrating how to tie a trucker’s hitch. They first start by taking the working end of the rope and feeding it around a stable part of the vehicle to create a bite in the line. In this case, it’s the front axle of the vehicle that’s used. From there, the firefighter will tie a bowline. There are many methods of tying a bowline and here the FF demonstrates one. When they tighten down on the knot, they’re careful not to pull too hard though and possibly unbalance the vehicle. Tie the knot tight enough to hold, but not so tight that it causes the vehicle to move.
As the FF feeds rope out of the bag, he makes sure to keep an eye on the load in case anything moves while he’s walking away.

In this case, he’s able to walk the rope around his anchor before tying a bowline on a bite. After tying his bowline, he takes the slack out of the line while watching the load. He finishes it off with two half hitches to keep the knot tight. He does this while pinching the slack that he just took out with his right hand.

If it’s not possible to run the rope bag around the anchor, another method is to simply run the rope around it instead.

Now the FF takes up slack in the line and ties a bowline on a bite. After tying the bowline, he again takes out the slack and ties two half hitches. When using this method, be careful when you’re taking the slack out and be sure to pull the correct line to tighten the line down.
