“What If…?” a new (ish) animated series that explores what the Marvel universe would be like if things were switched around--if characters were different, if storylines were played with. In theory, this idea sounds really cool. And throughout the past year, Marvel has established a pretty good track record of TV-shows-that-I-thought-wouldn’t-be-great-but-were-actually-amazing. So I decided to give it a shot.

But almost immediately, something felt off. Something in the story was wrong. It just wasn't clicking, and at first, I didn’t know why.

And then I realized: THERE IS NO THEME.

That's the whole reason "What If...?" wasn't enjoyable. The theme was missing. And even though theme is just one piece of storytelling, it's by far the most important. Why?

Because the second we lose the THEME, we also lose the CHARACTER.
