An Archival Viola by BMK for Navaratri : Varalakshmi Namostute - Gowrimanohari - M K Vasudevacharya

Navarātri is dedicated to femininity in nature. The divine Goddesses Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi are used as the symbols of three dimensions of the feminine and they also represent the three basic qualities of existence Tamas, Rajas and Sathva.

Tamas literally means inertia, Rajas means activity and passion and Sathva in a way is breaking of boundaries of dissolution, melting and merging among the three celestial objects which are deeply connected to the making of our bodies: the Earth, the Sun and the Moon.

These three aspects of nature (Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi) will follow in a sequence in the festival of Navarātri. These three are the dimensions of existence and sustenance for all us because we need them all. The first two are needed for our survival and well-being and the third is an aspiration to go beyond.

Navarātri starts off not only with this fabulous symbolism, but also holds a very important secret of a possibility of transcendence, from the state of inertia through the state of activity and entanglement and then opening of the possibility of transcendence.

Music otherwise called as the sibling of supreme happiness (Brahmānanda sahódaraha) is a sure vehicle to assist and enable such transcendence and we sincerely hope this presentation facilitates the journey into it.

For the Navarātri-2020, we present you three renditions of Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK), one of each for Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi.

The third rendition presented here, in the series, is dedicated to the Goddess Lakshmi. It is a vintage recording restored from tapes. In this viola recital, BMK plays the composition of Mysore K Vasudevacharya “Varalakshmi Namóstute” in the Raga Gowrīmanóhari. No additional details are available about the concert or the accompanying artistes.
