The liquid she tried to carry through security today

I am holding a three liter bottle of olive oil that a woman tried to bring through my checkpoint, sitting right at the top of her tote bag like it was an ordinary water bottle. Her mother carries it back from Italy once a year, and she did not want to risk a glass bottle getting shattered in a checked bag.

I understand the sentiment completely, but twenty years at this checkpoint means I have to be the one to tell her the liquid rule has been three point four ounces per container since two thousand six. That bottle was over the limit by about a thousand, and there was nothing I could do but watch it go in the bin.

If you are carrying something liquid that actually matters to you, a family oil, a special perfume, a homemade sauce, it has to be checked, wrapped, and padded properly, or it does not fly at all. Sort that out at home, not at the front of my line.
