Top 10 Worst Things About Trucking

Barely scratching the surface here but I'm trying to keep these things YouTube-length, yknow?

FOOTNOTES:

I've only ever done the easiest kind of trucking: dry van OTR (commonly referred to as "steering wheel holding.") And no, I don't own the truck, either. I'm pretty sure I have it just about as headache-free as it can possibly get in this industry, so if you're thinking about trucking... keep that in mind.

Training: Yes, training sucks and it's way too long to be sharing a vehicle with someone who isn't your spouse or blood relative. But at the same time... it's also not long enough to learn everything about how to drive a truck. By the end of it, you're both sick of each other, but at the same time, you're never really ready to leave. It's a weird time. Also, for the record, my trainer was pretty cool but the folks at home needed to know that isn't always the case.

DOT: I actually don't have an issue with the DOT, per se. Keeping people safe is good and important. The issue is that truckers are always stuck in the middle of the conflicting interests of the government, the customers, and the trucking company. And no matter whose fault it is, it's always the trucker's fault. For example, weight limits are good and make sense. But why ticket the driver, and not the shipper that loaded the trailer? Equipment inspections are good and make sense. But why ticket the driver, and not the company responsible for doing the maintenance? Obviously in some situations, the driver has more culpability than others - but in practice, the driver is always at fault, regardless of the circumstances. Especially if there's an accident.

Sleep: Yes, you will be incentivized to drive while tired, but no, you should NOT push yourself beyond your limits. There are laws that protect you from being forced to drive. If a dispatcher is trying to make you run when you've told them you can't, that's illegal, and you're working for a bad company. Find a different one. Drowsy driving can be just as bad as drunk driving, and just as lethal. No cargo is worth someone's life. When in doubt, park it and sleep.

Honorable mentions: lack of parking availability and driver-facing cameras. Both of these things are also very bad and I do not like them.
