[2/3] Ford Transit Not Starting - Fuel Pump Control Module Fix! 2015 Ford Transit Van 350 3.7L- Rd.↓
😄 This is part 2 of 3 videos sharing about the problem of my 2015 Ford Transit 350 3.7 liter van. The below is a breakdown of all the videos as well.
Video 1: Shows the problem of our van not starting and even continuing to try to turn on while removing hand from key -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xxCHQ1xJEo
Video 2: Shows the 2015 Ford Transit 350 3.7 liter fuel pump control module part location and explanation (somewhat dark) -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swpfU356yAM
Video 3: Shows the clearer view of the part location -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9M3roVVkq4&t=1s
1. Vehicle: 2015 Ford Transit Van/Wagon 350 3.7 liter
2. Part number (new): AA8Z 9D370 B (use '9D370' to search)
3. Par link: https://parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/module-engine-fuel-7887831-1#sectionId:4395900 (specifically under 'Related Parts' in the assembly)
4. Mechanic chart part location: C433
5. Part location on vehicle: Under driver seat (outside, underneath), attached to frame, beyond the head of the fuel tank, not immediately visible, hidden and wedged in corner of frame, and reachable from laying on the ground.
6. Tools: 10 mm socket, socket wrench, and extension.
7. Cost: $61 (CA 2018 dealership rate)
8. Labor: Do it yourself (i.e. in your driveway since it's broke down and your don't want to pay for towing :)), mobile mechanic, dealership, or mechanic's location.
9. Error code: Never had one, but some report error code P0627.
1. Problem:
This video shows an issue that came out of nowhere a few mornings ago in which the van would crank but not start, however, the van would start later in the day. There are various reasons for these Ford Transits to not start (either brand new or several years later) like a starter, electrical, alternator, outside temperature (covered in the owner's manual), fuel pump, battery, etc. Apparently, in some situations like this one, the fuel pump control/drive module (FPCM or FPDM) was failing and then completely failed. I've read about several drivers saying their van stopped while driving, where ours just didn't start in the mornings. The fuel pump control module part controls the pressure of the fuel between the gas tank and engine. It's a seemingly small and insignificant part, but it's incredibly important and necessary for ignition, running, and fuel flow quality (i.e. gas mileage). I also noticed that on the days it would finally start later in the day and while in idle, the fuel average shown on our dashboard would drop dramatically to 5.5 miles per gallon vs. 9-12 mpg on average.
2. Solution:
I had a difficult time researching the issue, let alone the exact location visually of the part on our van, since our van is a Ford Transit 12 passenger 'wagon,' 350 3.7 liter. Many of the other Fords like F-150, F-250, F-350, Fusions, or even Ford Transit 150 or 250 all have different parts and locations. Some fuel pump control modules are in the rear driver side axle or easily accessible under the front driver side. There was nothing available to view (videos, images, etc.) where these fuel pump control modules were located on, in, or under the van making it incredibly difficult for a do it yourself, economical fix.
3. Fix:
These Ford Transit 3.7 liters seem to have them tucked into a precarious spot directly under the driver's front seat, attached to the frame, at the head (towards engine/next to transmission) of the gas tank, and not immediately visible. Much easier if you have a car garage with a lift or lifting the vehicle somehow, but I replaced it laying on the ground and reaching in. The mechanics manual shows a diagram location of C433 and part number AA8Z 9D37 B, a $61 purchase from a CA Ford dealership in 2018.
