Pure Saxon Coin Manifestation. Sceat Found.
Pure Saxon coin manifestation. Unbelievable metal detecting find. Followed the clues to track down a Saxon Sceattes, (Sceat). I apologise for the wind noise on this video. Typical on my best find, a Continental Sceates, c. 695-740, series E, 'porcupine' design.
(The result of this coin has come back from the finds liaison officer as: Continental Sceat, Series E, Secondary variety A dated approximately 720-740 AD).
The clues were, a single previous Saxon find, which I initially thought was a one off loss of someone passing through. Little bits of miss-shaped lead. Other whole lead items, such as spindle whorls. Then to take those clues and detect very slowly and dig every signal, no matter how low, weak and scratchy the signal, and hey presto!
I am just a newbie at this hobby so please take any detecting advice under better expert advisement.
After the Roman withdrawal from the British Isles society fragmented. New coinage stopped being produced. Saxons began to move into the void. One estimate is that 200,000 Saxons, mainly male, came to Briton, which had a population estimated at 2 million, the largest percentage immigration ever. They were noted for their metal work. Coinage began again in the seventh century, the Saxon age, which lasted until 1066 and the invasion of William the Conqueror.
When I find a silver hammered coin (which does not happen very often) I always wonder about who lost it and life then. If it is something like a Queen Elizabeth 1st coin I feel a glimmer of what they could have been like. With these Saxon finds I really do not have much of a sense of them at all.
Thank you to all who watch and leave comments. I hope you enjoy the episode and good luck to you out on the fields.
