IELTS / TOEFL Writing Tip: Overused/misused expressions: clear, undoubtedly, hotly debated, + more

A common error many writers make, especially on the IELTS and TOEFL essay, is using sweeping generalizations. These are statements that are presented as facts and that apply to many, sometimes even all, people. These expressions include:

It is clear / obvious that…
It is true that…
It is without doubt that…
Undoubtedly, …
______ is hotly debated/ is a topic of great debate
______ has been a controversial topic…

In many cases, these words and expressions are used incorrectly or in the wrong context.

In this video we look at some examples of incorrect uses of these expressions, as well as some valid ones.
