Down with Influence! Maxime Rovere's on Epistemology of the Humanities, at Princeton University.

Maxime Rovere, invited by prof. David Bellos as as a Eberhard L. Faber Short-Term Visiting Fellow in the Humanities Council and Department of French and Italian, challenges the concept of "influence". He writes : "Arts, Literature and Philosophy: when it comes to telling the history of creations of all sorts, we usually look for the sources to which an author or artist has drawn, and whether they are explicit or implicit, it is commonly accepted to speak of the « influence » of the predecessors on the successors. Unfortunately, this term, designed to avoid any mechanical determinism, remains a prisoner of a causal pattern. After showing its limits, we will propose to start from a nonlinear temporal structure and shape the concepts of another type of history.
