The influence of jazz is due to the fact that Chicago was a city of industry during the 20th Century. Young workers from around the world would come to the city, which had a lot of industry at that time. During that time there was a great deal of immigration, so many African-Americans migrated to the city. They had lots of money, and they spent it on music.

And jazz is one of the most popular forms of music during this period. The increased numbers of people have created a new demand for cabarets, cafes, restaurants, dance halls, amusement parks, and movie houses, particularly on the South Side, while also stimulating the market for musically talented entertainment in the city's “bright light” districts. Pianists gravitated to the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, setting in motion a grand procession of twentieth-century music styles associated with Chicago.

The city of New York’s music publishing business dominated the market for decades, but Chicago tended to attract musicians rather than professional songwriters, and these musicians tended to excel at nightclub work.

As early as 1906, such influential performers as pianists Tony Jackson and Ferd La Menthe “Jelly Roll” Morton were experimenting with fresh improvisational possibilities that did much to transform ragtime into jazz. So too did Chicagoans listen to a series of cornetists/bandleaders, such as Freddie Keppard, Manuel Perez, and especially Joseph “King” Oliver.

A white group calling itself Stein's Dixie Jass Band performed at the Schiller Café in 1916. Several of them later organized into the original Dixieland Jazz Band and played on the first jazz records ever made.
