WHY IS NOBODY TRAVELING HERE? | Lake Catemaco, Mexico

We went off the beaten path in the jungle of Veracruz, Mexico and discovered a magical lake town called Catemaco. This is easily one of our favorite experiences in Mexico!

Have you heard of Laguna Catemaco, Veracruz? It's a little-known gem surrounded by lush mountains and exotic wildlife. There are numerous nature reserves nearby which are filled with tropical birds, wild monkeys, waterfalls, and spring water you can drink right out of the mountain.

Catemaco is known amongst Mexicans to be a particularly magical place where shaman and witches (chamán and brujos) practice ancient energy rituals. I experienced one of these, a "limpia," during our trip. Moises, a 14-year shaman used copal smoke, tree branches, and an egg to perform an energy cleansing to rid me of stress, negativity, and bad energies. We also got to stay in our most unique rental yet! A stilted, treehouse-style cabin with a jaw-dropping view of Lake Catemaco. Below the cabin were some hammocks to relax in while listening to a chorus of birds insects. Visiting Catemaco, Veracruz was easily one of the most incredible experiences we've had in Mexico after three years of traveling across the country!
