How to Dye Hair from Black to Brown Without Bleach l Loreal HiColor: Vanilla Champagne

Here's a tutorial on how to dye your hair at home from black to brown without bleach. I used L'Oreal HiColor High Lift hair dye in the color Vanilla Champagne and a 30 volume crème developer (bought at Sally Beauty Supply). This blonde dye is specifically made for dark hair so it didn't leave me with much brassiness. Before this, the top half of my hair was virgin black and the bottom half was previously dyed (dark) brown, so you'll get to the results on both. Overall, this hair dye gave me a medium chocolate chesnut brown hair color indoors and a lighter brown outdoors. If you'd like something lighter, I'd recommend going for L'Oreal's honey blonde or natural blonde hair dye. :)

*If you're nervous about how the color will turn out, I'd highly recommend doing a section test first. Mix a little bit of dye with developer and apply it to a 1 inch section of hair. Foil that off and wait for the required amount of them. Then, rinse that off. If you like the results, you can continue on dying the rest of your hair.

Here are additional tips for dying your hair:
1. To make sure that you are not allergic to the hair dye, do a skin patch test first.
2. Before you dye your hair, leave it unwashed for at least 2 days. The natural hair oils will help to protect your hair & scalp from the chemicals. You can also try the coconut pre-treatment mask like I did.
3. Wear a shirt that you don't mind getting dirty or throwing away. The dye might stain it.
4. Rub some Vaseline along your hairline if you don't want the hair dye to stain your skin. If you do get any stains on your skin, wipe it off with a paper towel and some water right away.
5. IMPORTANT: Start from the bottom and move up, making sure that you saturate your bottom layers. The color will develop faster at your roots because it's new hair and there's more heat there. If you're retouching your roots, then that's a different story.
6. Since you can't see the back of your head, you can ask someone to help you apply the dye for best even results
7. I am not a professional. Please try at your own risk! I'd suggest doing more research beforehand so you can have an idea of whether the color is right for you.
