Newly discovered gigantic stick bug is Australia's heaviest insect

A massive new species of stick insect has been discovered in Australia, with researchers calling it a contender for the nation’s heaviest insect.

Weighing 44 grams, the winged creature was found in the high-altitude rainforests of northern Queensland by a team led by James Cook University researcher Angus Emmott. The insect, named Acrophylla alta, remained undiscovered due to its remote, difficult-to-access habitat high in the forest canopy.

Two specimens are now part of the collection at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.
