Abstarct - The modern electrical landscape is shifting toward a Smart Grid architecture, which integrates digital communication with power distribution to enhance reliability and safety. Traditional grids often suffer from unauthorized access and accidental electrocution during maintenance, necessitating a more robust control system. This project implements a sophisticated access control mechanism using RFID technology and Arduino, ensuring that only authorized personnel can toggle the grid’s operational status. By incorporating an LCD for real-time status updates and a microswitch-based physical interlock, the system provides a dual-layer security protocol that prevents the grid from being turned on during active electrical work. The integration of Solid State Relays (SSR) allows for seamless, spark-free switching of high-voltage area loads, which is a significant improvement over mechanical relays. Furthermore, the system includes a monitoring feature where the high-voltage power is stepped down to drive LED loads, simulating residential or industrial consumption patterns. This setup not only prevents power theft and unauthorized tampering but also prioritizes worker safety by locking out the power supply during repairs. By automating the load management and access protocols, the project demonstrates a scalable model for localized smart grids that reduce human error and operational losses. Ultimately, this smart grid prototype serves as a foundation for intelligent energy management systems that are secure, responsive, and highly efficient in urban and rural distribution networks.
Component Details
Arduino Uno/Mega: The brain of the project, responsible for processing RFID data and controlling the SSR and LCD.
RFID RC522 Module: Operates at 13.56 MHz to read UID tags for authorized personnel access.
16x2 LCD Display: Provides a visual interface to show "Access Granted," "Maintenance Mode," or "Grid Status."
Solid State Relay (SSR): A semiconductor switching device used to turn the AC grid power on or off without moving parts.
Limit Microswitch: A physical safety sensor that detects if a panel is open, preventing power flow during maintenance.
Step-down Transformer (220V to 12V): Reduces the mains voltage to a level suitable for driving the simulated LED loads.
LED Load Bank: A series of LEDs used to represent the electrical consumption of a specific area or neighborhood.
Voltage Regulator (LM7805/DC-DC): Ensures a stable 5V supply for the Arduino and sensors from the stepped-down power.
Connecting Wires & Breadboard/PCB: For establishing secure electrical connections between the logic and power circuits.
