Yamaha Raptor 660R Overhaul
Andrew and Christopher are awesome! They dropped off a 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660R for me to play with. It was a little rough but I was able to sort it all out.
The engine needed to be rebuild. The cylinder, piston, and piston rings were worn very badly. It was sucking ALOT of oil up past the rings. There's some really good video of that when I test ride it. It was like a frigging steam locomotive. Rebuilt it with a big bore kit which basically increases the engine displacement to the same as the newer Raptor 700. It uses a 10:1 compression ratio which is a bit higher than the stock 700 that comes with 9.2:1. So it's actually better than a stock 700.
Rebuild the head while I was at it. The exhaust valves were completely caked in carbon. The valves were only letting a little solvent through when I tested it for leaks. Regardless, i did a valve job and gave it some new valve stem seals.
The carbs needed to be rebuilt. I got a decent kit for it. It came with all of the seals, as well as most of the jets and needles. It had everything I needed. The previous owner jammed one of the pilot jets up into the carb body. Didn't actually notice that until after I started testing it. It may be a little tuning still but I got em working pretty darn good right now.
It only need a couple of other little things. A new battery, throttle cable, key switch. It seems good to go now. Time to find a decent sized trail.
