Rare Indiana law comes up in recounts of Senate District races

Right now, two Indiana state senate primaries are heading to recounts. Both are Republican races. In far northeastern Indiana, incumbent Sen. Liz Brown leads Darren Vogt by 15 votes in Senate District 15. On Tuesday, May 19, Vogt filed for a recount.

In northwestern Indiana, incumbent Sen. Spencer Deery is leading challenger — and President Donald Trump-endorsed — Paula Copenhaver by just two votes in Senate District 23. Copenhaver has filed a more-than-100-page petition for a recount in the election, alleging that more than a dozen voters broke an obscure section of Indiana law.
