MR DUNCAN explains the English phrase - 'Save it for a rainy day' What does it mean? #englishaddict

SCRIPT...

One of the most common problems that
we all find at some point in our lives

is having enough money to cover
those unexpected events.

Many people like to save money
for such an occurrence.

They might have a special
emergency fund that they keep aside

for those moments that may
come suddenly out of the blue.

To come 'out of the blue' means
to appear without warning.

Something you are not expecting
to happen comes out of the blue.

There is a lovely phrase that we use to describe
the action of putting money aside for emergencies.

We often say that we are saving
that money 'for a rainy day'.

The rainy day, of course, is the problem.

A moment of time when something
unexpected occurs.

That is the rainy day.

Perhaps an unexpected bill
arrives on your doorstep.

That money put aside will come in
very useful to pay off the debt

without having to worry too much about it.

Perhaps a serious problem occurs
with something in your house.

Maybe some emergency repairs
have to be carried out.

Once again, that money you have put aside
will help you pay for that work to be done.

The rainy day might also be your general future.

A small amount of money that you have put aside or invested
in some way will come in useful later on in your life.

We can also describe this type of saving as a nest egg.

Something put aside for that unexpected
moment that might just crop up out of the blue.

The phrase 'crop up' means appear or occur,
quite often in an unexpected way.

A problem might crop up.

Something crops up suddenly,
thus creating a problem.

That is the reason why having something put by
or saved in a safe place is a wise thing to do.

You are keeping something back 'for a rainy day'.
