ByteDance just open-sourced UI-TARS Desktop — a native AI agent that sees your screen, controls your mouse and keyboard, and finishes tasks in any app from a single English prompt. The app is free (Apache-2.0). The model — UI-TARS-1.5-7B — has open weights on Hugging Face. Run it against vLLM or MLX on your own laptop and the entire computer-use loop happens locally. No OpenAI key. No Claude bill. No subscription. No screenshots leaving your machine. This is the first time the same capability as Claude Computer Use and OpenAI Operator is fully self-hostable.
