How Byzantium Was Broken Before the Fourth Crusade Arrived

A campaign proclaimed for Jerusalem ended with the destruction of Christendom’s greatest eastern capital. The real question is not only why the crusaders turned aside, but why Byzantium proved so vulnerable when they arrived.

This documentary examines The Fourth Crusade and the Catastrophe That Shattered Byzantium From Within through the financial crisis of 1202, Venice’s contract with Doge Enrico Dandolo, the attack on Zara, and the intervention of Prince Alexios Angelos, who promised 200,000 silver marks, troops, and church union in exchange for restoration. It follows the expedition from the June 1203 arrival at Constantinople to the failed reign of Alexios IV, the coup of Alexios V Doukas, the March 1204 partition agreement, and the final assault of April 13. The sack that followed stripped relics, treasure, archives, and works of art from the Byzantine capital and led to the Latin Empire under Baldwin of Flanders.
