Being Homeless in Long Beach | Special by Christian Outreach in Action | Long Beach Ca. Nonprofit Organization
Christian Outreach in Action (COA) [https://www.coalongbeach.org] provides services helping families and individuals to get back on their feet and make progress toward a healthy and sustainable life. Continuing its video series, "The People of COA," COA volunteer Keith shares his knowledge about what it means to be homeless in Long Beach and where COA fits in.
Keith is a former news journalist who joined COA's Men's Program earlier in 2019. He moved to Long Beach in 2015 and is fascinated by social issues and urban planning. With that in mind, Keith keeps a keen eye on minor details he sees while crisscrossing the streets of downtown Long Beach.
He has experience with the homeless population and services available. In this video, Keith offers deep, detailed insight into what it's really like to live on and off the streets and how COA helps address the situation locally.
"People can underestimate the impact that COA is making, which is unfortunate," Keith said after the video production. I've seen, first-hand, people who once lived on the streets, who are now recovered and doing much better today, with the help of COA.
It is a powerful thing to focus on helping the least fortunate persons in our community. And COA helps them to take the initial steps needed in that journey toward self-sufficiency.
COA is a registered nonprofit organization, which is based in a church property in downtown Long Beach; but operationally it is nondenominational, with a belief in faith-based teachings that tell us to provide compassionate assistance to those in need.
We are compelled by the need around us to feed people in need, provide spiritual support, help heal the sick ... and to ultimately teach them the skills necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency. To do this, COA depends almost entirely on private donations.
We have been blessed by the support from the community, in terms of donated food, clothing and other items, as well as sponsorships and corporate assistance.
