Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnel

The Pennsylvania Turnpike was designed and constructed as a two-lane highway. That is 2 lanes of traffic traveling East and 2 lanes of traffic traveling West. Great design .......until a traveler had to contend with any of the 7 tunnels. These 7 tunnels were designed and constructed as single lane tunnels. That means every time the traveler approached a tunnel their 2 lanes of travel would become merged into a single lane through the length of the tunnel where upon the 2-lane travel would be reestablished. So, it wasn't too long traffic jams developed, congestion ensued, and accidents occurred. Not to mention ventilation problems with carbon dioxide from automobile exhaust. The brave men and women of the turnpike commission gathered together to try to solve the issue. After a while of thinking about it, someone said we should have made the tunnels two lanes like the highway was. Everyone voiced their agreement. But the issue was not solved. Then after more thinking, someone said we should make all 7 tunnels available for2 lane traffic. Again, all in agreement. But from the back of the room someone yelled out, why not simply abandon the 3 tunnels causing the problems. An uproar of cheers could be heard across the hall. Simply reroute the highway and abandon 3 tunnels. That plan would also include abandoning a Service Plaza. So, these brave folks of the commission by the power vest in them simply abandoned a tunnel, rerouted the highway and "Wa La", part of the issue was solved. Four years later 2 additional tunnels, a service plaza and 13 miles of highway were abandoned, road rerouted. The other unoffensive tunnels were bored for 2 lane traffic. Later everyone sat around holding their big "raises" and patting each other on the back for a job well done. No one really seemed to care about the tens of millions of wasted tax dollars................ Not to mention the added costs of new boring, purchasing land rights, engineering, designing, constructing and building 13 miles of new highway. Another guy was heard saying "it's only tax dollars".
