Some of mankind’s earliest conceptions of automated rhythm can be dated as far back as the year 1206. While the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad, Iraq, certainly could never have envisioned the indelible grooves of J Dilla’s sample-based beat crafting when he commissioned Ismail al-Jazari to write what would ultimately imagine non-human music making, it makes one thing clear: throughout history, humans have imagined the possibility of artistic creation beyond their corporeal forms. More than 800 years have passed since al-Jazari’s writing first came to fruition, and the explosion in production and performance possibilities means there’s no time like the present to remedy this rivalry. Nick D’Virgilio’s on the drums, D’Will’s armed with a beat pad, and a jam nearly a millennium in the making is going down. Check it out!
