Metal microstructures in 3D and 4D

Lecture by Professor Dorte Juul_Jensen, in a series entitled "Metallic Microstructures", organised by KTH Stockholm, Gent University and Delft University of Technology.

Three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) allows the mapping of metal microstructures down to the submicrometer scale and time resolution extends this to four dimensions. The principles of these techniques are introduced with examples, particularly in dealing with recrystallisation.

The methods are fast and non-destructive, aimed at the study of individual crystalline elements (grains or subgrains) within mm-sized polycrystalline specimens. Based on two principles: the use of highly penetrating hard X-rays from a synchrotron source and the application of “tomographic” reconstruction algorithms for the analysis of the diffraction data.
