UN envoy: Myanmar risks period of isolation

The UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, who is one of the few international figures who has been in contact with the generals in charge, believes the country now risks isolation following the military coup.

Myanmar's military earlier repeated its promise to hold fresh elections and relinquish power- but levelled news charges against the country's democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Christine Burgener said she would continue to call for Myanmar's military to 'refrain from violence' in the suppression of the ongoing anti-coup protests there.
