Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition where the arteries in the legs become narrowed or blocked, usually due to plaque buildup, restricting blood flow. Symptoms include leg pain when walking, numbness, slow-healing sores, and cold feet.

How Vascular Surgeons Help:
1. Lifestyle & Medications: Surgeons may recommend exercise, a healthy diet, smoking cessation, and medications to manage cholesterol and blood pressure.

2. Angioplasty & Stenting: A balloon is used to widen blocked arteries, and sometimes a mesh tube (stent) is inserted to keep them open.

3. Bypass Surgery: If arteries are severely blocked, a vascular surgeon may reroute blood flow using a graft.

4. Endarterectomy: Surgeons can remove plaque buildup from affected arteries.

5. Wound Care: If PAD causes non-healing ulcers, vascular surgeons provide specialized treatment.

In severe cases, surgery may be needed to prevent further complications. Vascular surgeons work to improve blood flow, relieve symptoms, and prevent more serious issues like limb amputation or heart attack.
