Pain after a total knee replacement * What is Normal?

Pain is normal and common following a total knee replacement. It can be best described as tolerable pain. It may be less during the first 24-48 hours, then increase around days 3-4 then normalize and reduce by the end of the first 7-10 days. At no point in the recovery process should it become unbearable.

Abnormal pain is pain that progressively worsens. Pain that doesn't abate with changes in position or rest. Abnormal pain is often accompanied by increasing redness, swelling, and heat around the knee or lower leg. If you feel as though your pain is becoming too intense and may be abnormal, don't hesitate to contact your surgical team, talk to your physical therapist, or go to the emergency room.
